When I graduated with my degree in accounting in 1990, I thought I would be set for life. I took the CPA exam and flunked it misreably. I went on interview after interview all with the same response, it's nice you have your education but where is your experience. I asked how amI supposed to gain experience if you won't hire me? Finally, after sixty interviews and hundreds of rejection letters later, I went back to working in the airline industry on the ramp. To me five years of college was wasted. In 1997, I was involved in a near fatal car accident and had to have back surgery. I was told I could never work in manual labor again. It took four years before I landed a great job, but I had verifiable experience. Great article, but true.
