My toughest audits

I worked for the State of Colorado as sales and use tax auditor. I was sent to Rocky Ford, Colorado to do an audit of a a car dealership. I asked when I called to confirm the audit if I would be meeting with the person I scheduled the audit with.. He responded with “no all of us salesman have been told to stay away while you were in town.” I documented this in my notes and told my supervisor.

When I arrived around noon on Monday I had a receptive audience. I was met by a woman that advised me someone was on the phone for me. I took the phone. It was a recently hired CPA from Las Vegas asking me to reschedule the audit. I refused saying “your client has had three weeks to prepare for this audit.” He hung up the phone, pissed. I looked around the lot and asked where were all of the cars? There wasn’t a car one on the lot. I asked for the dealer plates and they said the plates were on vehicles in Aurora. I had the plate numbers, so I called my supervisor, she had the police pull the vehicles with the dealer plates over and to recover the plates and impound the vehicles.

I went to the police department and found that over four hundred vehicles had been carted off to the auto auction starting early Friday Morning until the early hours of Saturday. I went driving around town and I found a hiding place that one hundred-fifty vehicles waiting to be sold after I left. I asked for sales jackets…
