Bravo for this article. I worked in the airline industry for thirty years. I am white. I had a black passenger who's flight was delayed by six hours due to weather. I told her I had no seats on any other flight out of the originating city but that I rebooked her on the last flight to Detroit. After the first flight left she came back down to the ticket counter, threw her boarding passes at me and said" I want to know why I wasn't on that first plane that went out with nothing but white folks on it you mother fucking racist son of a bitch. " I pushed her boarding passes back at her and told her I wasn't going to help her. My black co-workers said don't you dare help her the way she just disrespected you. What she said was so loud everyone in my employee break room came running out and every airlines ticket counter hear her. Small airport. My supervisor came down and talked to her for an hour, showed her our numbers and said I couldn’t put her on any other flight. He finally was able to get her to apologize. He was black. After she left he said to me he said " for you to take a cussing out like that, and still forgive her, if your taught your kids to be like you then you've done one hell of a job." I have had the race card thrown in my face so many times in the airline industry, I'd be a millionaire if I was paid a $1 for every time the race card was played on me.
