On Tuesday September 11,2001, terrorist hijacked four different aircraft and used three of them as missiles against us on our own soil. The fourth one the passengers fought back and crashed the plane into an empty field in Shanksville, PA. They had been told the target was the White House by loved ones and these people fought to prevent that from happening.

One of the pilots and the flight crew I knew quite well because I worked with them at American Airlines. So this attack was already personal for me. I was ready to suit up and go join the military at the age of forty. I was pissed, this really brought back memories of nearly being a victim in Munich.

I had taken a break from the airline industry because of being laid off by American. I was awaiting recall so I was working as a field auditor with the state of Colorado. I was in training my first year and I had been with the state seven months. My trainer for the week was named Barrett Parmer, an Indian who was a Muslim. We were on Walsenburg, CO a city halfway between Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

On Tuesday when I saw the news, my heart sank. I knew life was going to be difficult for Barrett because of him being a Muslim in a small town. But in Denver they weren’t worried because I was from a small…
