A promise made seventy-three years ago, fulfilled
Number one I apologize for the video length. But I find this story to be very intriguing to me. A young Marine in world war two took a flag from a Japanese soldier but made a promise to return it to him. He had no idea how he would do so, but still a promise is a promise.
In Japan the flag stood for something and it meant everything to the Japanese soldiers back then. They didn’t want to give up their flags. The writings on the flag, maybe autographs from those in his company, maybe platoon but you can see the writing.
So seventy-three years later with help from the Obon Society, Mr. Stover was able to return the beloved flag to the Japanese soldier that he promised so many years ago to do. It was in my opinion Mr. Stover’s final mission, because he passed away in 2020. To me this is the true American spirit, the right way to treat your enemy. To the soldier in Japan receiving his flag back signified the ending of the war and the beginning of lasting peace.
It was nice to see the two old soldiers holding hands and walking together. It was good to see that Mr. Stover and his family were well received by the Japanese family. The scenery in the video makes me really want to go to Japan on a tour.
This is a great heart warming story in my opinion. Mr. Stover was an honorable man.
